Why BlueGrid

What got you from one to two won't get you from two to three.

That sentence is the reason this company exists. Everything below is what we do about it.

I've started businesses since I was a teenager. Some worked, some didn't, and the pattern I kept running into wasn't the one I expected.

The businesses that stalled were almost never stalling for lack of effort. The owner was usually working harder than anyone I knew — first one in, last one out, doing the job and the books and the phone. They hadn't run out of work ethic. They'd run out of the thing that got them there.

Getting from one to two is grit. You can do that on your own, and most people do. Two to three is a different problem, and grit alone won't solve it. That's usually the point where somebody needs a hand — not a rescue, just someone who's seen the next step and can show them where it is.

That's the whole idea behind BlueGrid. Not that your business is broken. That there's more in it, and that how you show up when someone goes looking for you is one of the honest ways to get at it.

We started with websites, and it didn't stay there for long. A website on its own doesn't do much if nobody can find it, or if the Google listing beside it is half empty and two years out of date, or if the enquiry lands at midnight and sits unanswered until Tuesday. So we took on the rest of it — search, your Google profile, hosting and upkeep, business email, an assistant on your site that catches the calls you'd otherwise miss. Not to have more to sell you. Because getting you the result meant we couldn't stop at the website and call it done.

You can still buy any single piece of that on its own, and plenty of people do.

So we made some decisions early, and we've stuck to them even when they've cost us. We publish our price so nobody has to sit through a call to find out if they can afford us. We take half at the start and half at the end, so you're never paying in full for something you haven't seen. We'll build you a preview before you've given us a penny. And we won't promise you the top of Google, because nobody can, and the people who say it are counting on you not knowing that.

I'd rather be honest and lose a client than lie and make a profit. That's easy to write on a website and harder on the day it actually costs you the job — but it's the only way I'm interested in doing this.

If it needs a late night to be right, it gets a late night. Not because we're chasing a deadline, but because your name is going on it and so is ours. We're not a supplier you file tickets with. You're not handed to whoever's free. There are two of us and we both work on your project, every time, and we'd rather you thought of us as part of your team than as a company you paid once.

I didn't start this to make the most money I could. I started it because owners get sold to badly, constantly, by outfits that don't care whether the thing works — and I'd like there to be at least one place where that isn't what happens.

Proof, not promises

Every one of these costs us something.

Anyone can say they're honest. These are the places where we've built the honesty into how we operate, so it holds even on the days it isn't convenient — and what each one takes off our own table.

The price

The numbers are on the website before you've spoken to anyone.

A complete custom website is $1,500 USD, flat, one time. Hosting is $30 a month. SEO Foundations is $149. Every service we offer is listed with its price, and you can read the lot at eleven at night without booking anything or giving anyone your phone number.

Costs usWe can't quietly charge more to someone who looks like they could pay more. Plenty of our industry runs on exactly that.
The preview

We build first. You decide after.

We'll put together a real preview of your website before you've paid anything, so you're judging the actual work rather than a pitch about the work.

Costs usHours spent on people who go elsewhere, or who look and decide not to bother. We think that's a fair trade for you not having to take our word for it.
The terms

Half at the start, half when it's finished.

You never pay in full for something you haven't seen working, and nothing goes live until you've looked at it and said yes.

Costs usWe carry the risk on the back half of every project. If it isn't right, that's our problem to fix before we're paid.
Ownership

It's yours the day it launches, and it stays yours.

Your code, your content, your domain. Leave whenever you like and all of it goes with you — no permission needed to change your own opening hours.

Costs usNo lock-in. We have to keep earning it every month instead of holding the keys and letting inertia do the work.
The people

Both of us work on your project. Every time.

Joshua builds it. Seif handles the first conversation and the plan that comes out of it. No account manager passing messages between you and someone you'll never meet.

Costs usWe can only take on so much at once. Growing faster would mean putting someone between you and the people doing the work, and we're not willing to yet.
The upsell

We'll tell you which parts of it you don't need yet.

Having fifteen services makes it very easy to sell someone twelve. If the honest answer is that you need the website and nothing else for the next six months, that's the answer you'll get.

Costs usThe obvious thing — money we could have taken. Recommending everything to everyone would be considerably more profitable and we'd have to stop calling ourselves honest.
The honesty

We won't promise you the top of Google.

We'll do the groundwork that helps Google understand what you do and where you do it. What we won't do is put a number or a position on it, because nobody can honestly give you one.

Costs usWork. Regularly. There is always someone willing to promise page one, and sometimes they get the job instead of us.

I'd rather be honest and lose a client than lie and make a profit.

What we're actually after

We measure this by what happens to you.

The phone rings more than it did

Not traffic, not impressions. Someone in your town looked you up, liked what they saw, and called. That's the only number that pays your wages.

You stop apologising for your website

You send people to it without the caveat. You put it on the van. It stops being the thing you've been meaning to sort out for a year.

You get to the next step

The first hire. The second van. Turning work down because you're full. Whatever two-to-three looks like for you — we'd like to have been part of it.

Let us show you rather than tell you.

We'll build a free preview of your website first — no payment, no obligation, no pitch. Judge us on that.
